What this project is
For more than a century the tram was part of Baku. It linked the station and the seafront, the old town and the workers' settlements, carrying people to work, to the market and to the sea — and became a familiar sound of city life.
This project is about the Baku tram: its birth, its golden years, its decline, and how it remained in the memory of the city.

The last years
By the end of the 20th century the Baku tram was living out its days: lines were dismantled, routes cut. In January 2004, just short of its 80th anniversary, the Baku tram made its final run.
About the declineLegacy
The rails were lifted long ago, but the tram remained — in photographs, in memories and in the names of places. For many people of Baku it is part of childhood and of the image of the old city.
